AS220 Industries Director (Digital Fabrication Focus)

(Full Time) 40 hours

Job Description

AS220 is a community of artists in downtown Providence, Rhode Island, that provides open forums and opportunities to Rhode Island artists. AS220 provides an alternative to traditional venues and has gained international attention for its commitment to an “open and unjuried”, egalitarian approach to nurturing creative community.

The activities of AS220 include, but are not limited to: seven nights a week of programming between our 115 Empire Street Performance Space and 95 Empire Black Box (including classrooms and Dance Studio spaces); monthly gallery exhibits; AS220 Youth, a free arts program for youth 14-21; and the AS220 Industries, a maker space comprised of AS220 Media Arts, the AS220 Community Printshop, and the AS220 Labs – our digital fabrication lab. AS220 also owns and operates its own bar and restaurant that provides locally sourced produce and spirits at a reasonable cost.  In addition to nearly daily activities, AS220 presents other signature annual events, such as its street festival Foo Fest. AS220 currently owns and operates three buildings in downtown Providence housing approximately 50 artists as well as commercial and non-profit tenants, providing individual and collaborative work spaces, galleries, venues for performances and exhibitions, and a bar and restaurant under the banner of AS220. The FY2014 operating budget of AS220 and related for-profit entities is $4.1 million.

The Industries are AS220’s self-sustaining, earned income approach to building community and providing resources, access and education around a variety of crafts and media. The Industries is comprised of three programs: AS220 Media Arts, The AS220 Community Printshop and the AS220 Labs. Program Leaders work together to identify best practices and standardize systems around access, membership and programming while focusing on the individual needs of their respective programs.

The Industries Director’s primary responsibility is to utilize the resources available to best implement the mission and vision of the Industries.  The Industries Director will also focus much of their time on the physical management of the AS220 Labs’ space, equipment and members.  The Media Arts Manager, Printshop Manager and Industries Coordinator report to the Industries Director.  The Industries Director reports to the Director of Programs, and works closely with the Managing Director.

 

Administrative

  • Visioning and long term planning for the Industries

  • Work with the Industries team and the Managing Director to develop and maintain the Industries annual budget (currently $300k)

  • Financial record keeping and management of earned income

  • Coordinate payments to contract workers and vendors

  • Manage the online shop for AS220 Labs

  • Build systems for “earned income” contract jobs for labs and labs members

  • Provide program evaluations and user metrics

  • Attend Staff, Key Member, Industries, and Foo Fest meetings, and other meetings as necessary.

  • With Administration, and Key Member input, create a vision and plan for the growth and expansion of the Industries

Communications

  • Work with Communications Director to maintain mailing and e-mail lists

  • Advertise workshops, programming, and special events

  • Build a marketing strategy for the Industries

  • Upkeep of AS220 Industries website, social media, and blog

  • Foster, manage, maintain, and grow relationships both inside AS220 and with the community at large, Key Members, and non-profit organizations, businesses, colleges, and schools, including MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms and the Fab Lab International Network

Education and Programming

  • Work closely with Labs and community members to schedule classes and workshops on a regular basis. Keep curriculum up to date.

  • Coordinate interns, monitor sessions, trainings, and assistantships

  • Collaborate with the Fab Academy Instructor to run the Fab Academy program yearly

  • Work with the AS220 Youth Media and Communications Coordinator to provide opportunities to young people

  • Keep up to date with innovations in the maker and digital fabrication fields

Space

  • Manage physical space logistics, including special events. Make sure safety procedures are followed.

  • Coordinate shop scheduling and programming.

  • Enforce and improve standard systems of usage for Labs equipment, including cleaning and maintenance procedures and the creation of user manuals for Labs members.

  • Maintain and grow online reservation system and develop new systems for streamlining management.

Technical

  • Best Practices: Implement and teach health and safety procedures to exceed state and national standards

  • Manage Inventory and supplies: hardware, software, & materials

  • Equipment purchases and maintenance

Development & Fundraising

  • Work with Managing Director, Director of Programs, Artistic Director, and Development Office to develop a fund raising plan and events

  • Aid AS220 Development in the identification of funding opportunities

  • Create and implement a plan for sustainable growth

  • Respond to funding opportunities as needed

  • Coordinate RI Mini Maker Faire

 

The ideal candidate will…

…have administrative experience, must know how to manage and facilitate others, have technical abilities, fabrication experience, be willing to get their hands dirty, and be a strong interpersonal communicator.  The position requires a big picture thinker who pays strong attention to detail and can manage projects independently as well as work in teams.  A sense of humor, grace under pressure, and energy for challenges are a must.
Compensation

AS220 has an equal pay policy for all full-time staff of the non-profit: $37,440 salary per year and benefits, including health care, generous and flexible paid time off, and opportunities for professional development.
