Fab Lab

Get trained up to use the CNC router, lasercutter, and 3D printers, learn to solder, explore new workshops in DIY electronics and P5JS

Intro to Laser and Vinyl Cutter
Tuesday July 9 + 16, 6-9pm
Learn how to lasercut wood, plastics, papers or textiles on the Epilog Mini AND learn how to use the vinyl cutter to make stickers and signs! This  class will cover the basics of vector graphics and certify you to use both tools independently.

Intro to CNC Router
Wednesday July 10 + 17, 6-9pm
Learn how to use the Fab Lab’s 4×8” ShopBot. We will cover 2D tool paths using PartWorks and VCarve Pro, as well as basic machine operation and safety.  This class will certify you to use the Shopbot independently.

Intro to 3D Printing
Thursday July 11 + 25, 6-9pm
Get started on your first 3D printing projects and learn the basics of heat control, speed, and layer height for optimal models. This workshop will certify you to use AS220’s Taz and Ultimaker 3D printers.

Advanced: CNC Milling
Saturday July 13 + 20, 2-6pm
This workshop is for anyone that has completed the Shopbot class and wants to machine small metal parts.  This workshop covers basic machine operation and safety and will certify you to use the TORMACH Personal CNC for independent use.

NEW CLASS:  Intro to Sewing, DIY Tool Pouch
Sunday July 14 + 21, 2-5pm
Learn how to use a sewing machine to create a roll-up pouch for your favorite tools. Great for pencils, paintbrushes, mat knives, and wrenches!

NEW CLASS:  Intro to HTML and CSS
Wednesday July 17, 24, 31, 6-9pm
3 classes, 3 hours each, where students who are just starting out learning web development basics can get their hands around core concepts to build an interactive and mobile-friendly web page.

Artwork Documentation 101
Thursday June 27, 6-9pm
An introduction to artwork documentation for artists of all practices!   Gain the skillset and knowledge you need to document your work clearly and creatively.

Software Basics: Photoshop
Monday July 1 + 8, 6-9pm
Learn the basics of Photoshop!  Introduction to Photoshop will allow participants to learn the basic tools and uses of Photoshop CC including scanning artwork, photo correction, resizing, working with text and saving your files. We’ll also dive into using layers, effects, and masking.

Software Basics:  After Effects
Tuesday July 2 + 9, 6-9pm
After Effects is Adobe’s professional motion graphics and compositing software for video editors, designers, animators, and 3D artists.  This two-session workshop will provide you with the basics of motion graphics to get your projects started.

Product Photography
Thursday July 11, 6-9pm
An introduction to the various forms of product photography and the tools of the trade.  We will cover brand consistency, DSLR photography basics, lighting, and more.

Large Format Photography
Saturdays, July 13 + 20, 10-2pm
A comprehensive introduction to large format photography, lighting and metering, and darkroom processing as it pertains to making prints and developing film.

Software Basics: Illustrator
Mondays, July 22 + 29, 6-9pm
Learn the basics of Illustrator to manipulate vector graphics for a range of projects and applications. This class will cover everything that’s needed to start creating, from the fundamentals of pixels versus vectors to basic drawing and shape manipulation.

Software Basics: InDesign
Tuesdays,  July 23 + 30, 6-9pm
Learn the fundamentals of print and digital publishing in two sessions.  InDesign is used for magazines, brochures and other types of long and short publishing formats.  The class will consist of formatting text and images into layouts, setting up master pages and graphic styles for text and creating simple documents.

Kick off the month with a deep dive on screenprinting, get certified to book the letterpress, make beautiful things!

Silkscreening on Apparel with Paris!

Saturday June 29 + July 6, 2-5pm
An introductory apparel printing class for beginners of alla ge!  Bring a shirt, jacket, or other item and learn proper techniques for fabric printing.

Meet the Press: Offset and Letterpress
Saturday July 6, 10-2pm
Learn how to print colorful ‘zines, single-page artist books, posters, and flyers in minutes using the ABDick Offset and Vandercook Letterpress.  These tools are mainstays of the AS220 Printshop and once a month we open the shop in a hands-on class to show you how they work!

NEW CLASS:  Acetate Pre-press: Making Films for Silkscreen
Thursday, July 11, 6:30-8:30 pm
Do you want to make better silkscreen films?   This workshop will cover how to output large format pictorico films on the Epson and Canon printers in Media Arts and do simple color correction for high quality films to be used in our shop.

Soft Plates: Monotype Studies
Saturdays, July 13 + 20, 10-1pm
Learn the basics of platemaking and monotype in this painterly workshop.  “Soft plates” are thin substrates like paper, plastic, and vinyl that are capable of holding fixed details, etchings, and carved lines.  These ‘soft plates’ will be printed on the Printshop’s Takach Etching Press measuring up to 54” x 9’.

Silkscreen Intensive
Sunday, July 21, 10-6pm
A comprehensive introduction to screen printing covering stencil design, troubleshooting, registration, and proper print procedure.  Design and print a multiple color print with a maximum dimension of 8″x10″. This workshop will certify you to book time in the silkscreen studio.

Intro to Silkscreen: Weeknight
Wednesday, July 24 + 31, 6-9pm
Screenprinting is a versatile process that can be used to transfer graphic images to paper, wood, and fabric. It is ideal for making prints, posters, coasters, greeting cards, stationery, and more.  This workshop will certify you to book time in the silkscreen studio.

NEW CLASS:  Lasercut Typography
Wednesdays July 24 + 31, 6-9pm
Learn how to fabricate a woodtype ornament from scratch using the Epilog Mini lasercutter!    Once the ornament is created, we’ll head over to the downstairs printshop and run a set of prints using the letterpress machine.

Intro to Letterpress: Setting Type
Saturday July 27 + Aug 3, 10-1pm
Get to know the California job case!  You will leave this class with a working knowledge of how to set type, to lock type in the chase, woodtype and lead type  best practices and troubleshooting, press operation including: inking, pressure and roller height adjusting, registration, and cleaning.
